Emergency Veterinary Services

Eastside Animal Medical Center is committed to providing emergency veterinary care for dogs and cats. Most patients will be seen in the order they arrive. However, patients in crisis will be given priority. Our focus is on emergency triage and stabilization, giving the long-term management decisions of certain cases back to the patient’s regular veterinarian. Emergency surgeries and diagnostic lab work will be performed when necessary to ensure the well-being of your pet. If necessary we will transfer any critical patients to an overnight emergency clinic.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Emergency Center is to provide immediate veterinary care when the patient’s regular veterinary office is closed. Close communication with the referring hospital will ensure continuity of care after the patient has been discharged from our facility. In providing emergency services, we hope to enhance relationships between people and animals by providing exceptional veterinary care with compassion and respect for the human/animal bond.

Knowing that your pet has a qualified, trained medical staff observing them overnight can be a source of great comfort to most family members, as well as to the referring veterinary staff. Our caring, professional team will be on hand to monitor, administer medication, and to provide comfort during the hours when your regular veterinarian is closed. We will discuss the patient’s ongoing care with your regular veterinarian after we dismiss the case from the emergency center.

Our Emergency and Critical Care service use technology and advanced skills to monitor, diagnose, and treat animals with acute or chronic illnesses. The most severe and life-threatening emergencies are managed in our critical care unit, and the emergency and critical care veterinarians provide the best patient care and treatment. Staff members understand the fears that owners experience when a beloved pet is in critical condition.

This service is fully staffed and available Monday through Saturday. The emergency team is trained to assess and treat pets that become ill when their family veterinarian is unavailable and to handle life-threatening emergencies. While some patients can be treated and released the same day, others must be admitted for further stabilization. Patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries are admitted to our critical care unit for close monitoring and advanced life support measures.

The unit is staffed by veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants with training in emergency and critical care. They utilize a variety of advanced monitoring and diagnostic tools:

  • Fluid therapy
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Pain management
  • BP monitoring
  • Continuous EKG
  • Enteral nutrition
  • Blood transfusion therapy
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Coagulation, complete blood count, and chemistry analyzers
  • Cardiac resuscitation, and post-resuscitation care

The staff will be prepared throughout your pet’s stay to update you on patient progress, as well as any changes being made in the patient’s treatment plan.

We will fax copies of the medical records and will send radiographs and copies of the laboratory tests with you when you transfer your pet back to your primary veterinarian.

Emergency Vet Services

If your pet has a medical emergency during your primary care veterinarian's regular office hours, we recommend first contacting him or her for a professional recommendation. If your veterinarian is not available or requires a critical care facility, we recommend you immediately bring your pet to our emergency animal hospital for treatment.

If you think your pet may be sick or injured and you're not sure exactly what to do, please call our vet care line at (678) 985-5530. When you call, one of our experienced emergency vet care team members can help assess the situation and determine whether your pet needs to be seen by our emergency team.
