History of Walton County

Walton County which was created by the Lottery Act of 1818, was organized in 1819. Georgia's 46th county was named for George Walton signer of the Declaration of Independence. Along with his political career, Walton also served as a trustee of Richmond Academy and of The University of Georgia. Lastly, named after him is the highly honored George Walton Academy in Monroe, Georgia.
